Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and medically relevant derivatives have structural characteristics that serve a role in their mechanism of action. Significant research of the endocannabinoid system has provided information on the necessary components for binding to cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. THC enzyme immunoassays can provide a means of evaluating structural differences in THC derivatives. Currently, our group studies cross-reactivity of organic ring compounds with characteristics similar to that of THC in the enzyme immunoassays. These assays utilize antibodies specifically against THC and investigating cross-reactivity of certain compounds can be useful in analyzing structural characteristics. Current compounds of interest include catechol, resorcinol, and hydroquinone among other organic ring alcohols. Furthermore, plans to investigate and report on the results of cross-reactivity of endogenous ligands of CB1 and CB2 receptors will be provided. This may provide valuable information for assessing the components of compounds such as anandamide and<br/>N-arachadonoylethanolamide that are critical in CBR binding.
