This tutorial covers several representative examples of crystallographic methods applied to problems in inorganic chemistry. The main objective of this discussion is to highlight potential pitfalls in seemingly routine crystallogrpahic work, as well as to demonstrate the powerful insight offered by crystallography into the nature of inorganic materials. In particular, we consider such aspects as (1) correlations between the nature of the element, its site occupancy factor, and atomic displacement parameter; (2) the potential influence of the unit cell and space group assignment on the crystallographic disorder model; and (3) the powerful combination of crystallography with other physical methods to provide a physically meaningful discription of the problem at hand.
