Design2Data (D2D) is a national research coordination network of biology and chemistry faculty teaching undergraduate laboratory courses. This course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) provides the infrastructure for faculty to involve students in investigating structure-function relationships in enzymes and collecting relevant data for the computational protein modeling and design community.<br/><br/>The D2D workflow is representative of professional protein biochemistry research and enables equitable access to cutting-edge biotechnology training in high demand by employers. Students use computational tools to design novel protein variants, build, express, and purify their variant with industry standard molecular biology techniques, and finally biophysically characterize them with colorimetric kinetic and thermal stability assays. Participation in D2D is linked to student attitudinal shifts associated with increased likelihood for students pursuing further research experiences. The results of this nationally networked CURE curriculum at Lewis University will be discussed.
