The closure of the nuclear fuel cycle depends, in part, on chemoselective separation of the minor actinides from the lanthanides. Complexants that affect covalent orbital interactions with significant additives of interest can enable desired outcomes in liquid-liquid separations, allowing the possibility for further transmutative processes that reduce problems associated with the storage of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) produced from energy and weapons manufacturing. In this work, a thermally induced intermolecular reaction of formyl mono-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl pyridine and 4-methylbenzenesulfono-hydrazides produced N-tosylhydrazones in good yield. Cycloaddition of N-tosylhydrazones initiated by 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene resulted in the formation of pyridyl [1,2,3]-triazoles in good yield. Isolation of end-product via reverse-phase chromatography method was established. Functional group interconversion of required starting materials, substrate scope and development of a reverse-phase automated flash purification method will be presented.
