Cu plays a wide role in current and future electrochemical processes. For example, proton-coupled electron transfer reactions such as the reduction of O2, NO3, CO or CO2 proceed on Cu surfaces in combination with proton and/or water reduction. Despite intense experimental and theoretical studies on structure and phase variants of Cu, understanding of specificity and activity is still limited especially regarding the role of H in hydrogenation steps. Using operando electrochemical mass spectrometry (ECMS) and shell-isolated nanoparticle enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) this work probes dynamics between electrolyte composition and Cu single crystals, namely Cu(100) and Cu(111), where recently surface hydride was identified on Cu(111). Surface hydride is significantly impacted by changes in electrolyte composition, such as the cation, anion or dissolved gas species and likely has significant impact over electrocatalytic performance. The dynamics between electrolyte composition, crystal facet, hydride and catalytic function will be presented within this talk.
