The objective of this work was to examine bioaerosol interaction with respirators with the goal of understanding touch transfer of pathogens, re-aerosolization risk and the efficacy of antimicrobial additives incorporated into respirators. <br/>We designed and built a bioaerosol application system that simulates real usage conditions of N95 respirators, and we used this system to conduct fundamental experimental studies to evaluate the risk of pathogen transfer from contaminated respirators and the potential for re-aerosolization of captured pathogens from respirators. Moreover, we examined the efficacy of various antimicrobial treatments on respirators to better understand the value of such additives in enhancing respiratory protection.
