Case studies will be presented for graduate programming designed to promote student training and engagement in industrial-relevant research throughout their Ph.D. research experience, and the resulting science such efforts can enable. A large and ever-increasing majority of Chemistry Ph.D. recipients ultimately pursue careers outside of academia, highlighting the importance of designing research and training activities to meet the needs of Ph.D. students with diverse career goals. Conventional graduate activities centered on coursework and thesis research may miss opportunities to gain familiarity with differences in culture and expectations between academic- vs. industry-centered research. Different models have been implemented at Purdue to encourage direct peer-to-peer interactions with Chemistry graduate students and industrial counterparts. Pros and cons will be discussed, along with assessment of the perceived benefits to students.
