Flexible electronics are currently paving the way for next-generation electronic devices in a myriad of fields, including wearable electronics, biocompatible electronics, transportation, and energy storage. Supercapacitors (SCs) are extremely versatile energy storage component that bridges the gap between the capabilities of batteries and traditional capacitors by having both: high specific power and high energy density. Nonetheless, the feasibility in terms of the practical application of flexible electronics such as flexible SCs relies on various aspects, including the geometry and chemical composition of printed components, as well as the choice of substrate. Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing, presents significant advantages for the fabrication of flexible electronic components when compared to traditional manufacturing methods. More specifically, AM enables waste reduction, design versatility, and the possibility of operating the fabrication process in a continuous fashion. This study investigates the effect of different geometric designs of printed SCs, including interdigitated and spiral-like electrodes in different dimensions. For the optimization of the performance of the printed SCs, different compositions of gel-polymer composites were also evaluated. Finally, the use of different rigid and flexible substrates including FR4, PET, PP, and PLA were investigated to produce printed-SC<br/>devices. The capacitive capabilities of all-printed SCs were then measured and compared to traditionally manufactured SCs. Each SC was also subjected to various mechanical stress tests. Future advances in AM in the field of electronic devices will allow for higher-performance electronic components, a more streamlined process, and versatility and flexibility in terms of the selection of active materials.
