Palladium catalysis is a well-studied field of organic chemistry, most notable for its ability to create new carbon-heteroatom and carbon-carbon bonds.  We have discovered a novel palladium-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation reaction.  Using Selectfluor as an oxidant, diphenylacetic acid can be converted to a diphenylmethyl ether under palladium catalysis in good yields.  The reaction was found to have a specific requirement for substituents that stabilized a carbocation and could be improved by adding drying agents and bases to avoid the overoxidation of benzophenone. Results of the optimization process and substrate scope will be presented.  Additional studies will include a further look at the reaction mechanism, allowing expansion into additional substrates.
