The primary objective of this study is to develop a robust and efficient catalyst to convert CO2 to value-added chemicals such as light olefins. Previously we developed a carbon nanosphere (CNS) encapsulated iron-cobalt catalyst that enabled the conversion of CO2 to light olefins. However, due to the agglomeration issues relate to CNS-Fe-Co, the catalytic performance in terms light olefin selectivity and CO2 conversion suffered. In this work, we introduced dispersing agents such as D-glucose, triglycerol and triton x-100, respectively, into the resorcinol-formaldehyde polymerization process in the presence of iron and cobalt complex solution. The synthesized catalyst was tested for CO2 and H2 reaction in 1:3 mole ratio through a flow bed reactor at various temperatures (200~400C) using on-line Gas Chromatagraphy (GC) analysis to determine the catalyst selectivity and conversion. The testing results showed encouraging selectivity for CO2 conversion to light olefins utilizing the dispersant to reduce the agglomeration of CNS-Fe-Co. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Temperature- programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were carried out with an aim to establish the activity and properties relations. This study will provide a significant insight to understand the role of dispersant in affecting the agglomeration of CNS-Fe-Co for CO2 conversion to light olefins.
