Lanthanide beta-diketonate hydrates serve as common starting materials for the synthesis of a variety of lanthanide coordination complexes. These diverse complexes are useful in different applications due to their distinct optical and magnetic properties. We report the synthesis of lanthanide (Ln= La, Ce, Pr, Nd & Sm) beta-diketonate hydrates with K+, Cs+ and Li+ salts by using two different methods of mechanochemical synthesis. In previous studies we showed, using crude Nahfac (hfac-1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) yielded the pentakis-hfac and tetrakis-hfac complexes in mortar and pestle. When crude Khfac, Cshfac and Lihfac were used, we found a mixture of pentakis-hfac and tetrakis-hfac complexes and isolated a retro-Claisen impurity after crystallization. The bulk material and single crystals were analyzed using Fourier Transform-IR (FTIR), single crystal and powder X-Ray Diffraction(XRD), 1H, 19F and 13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.The bulk and crystal characterization revealed trends between the different alkali counter cations in terms of stoichiometry and hydration.
