Alpha manganese oxide, α-MnO2, is formed by corner and edge sharing [MnO6] units forming intergrowth 2x2 (4.6 Å x 4.6 Å) and 1x1(1.9Å x 1.9 Å) tunnels. The growth direction is typically in the direction of [001] and has a body centered tetragonal structure with I4/m space group. This manganese dioxide structure has found to be an attractive electrode material due to its excellent redox properties and ability to accommodate a variety of cations in the tunneled structure. Physicochemical (i.e. surface area, crystallite size), morphological properties, and chemical stoichiometry (i.e. vacancies and central cation type) can be controlled through careful design of the synthesis method. Synthetic control of the factors allows investigation of their impact on the resulting functional electrochemistry. Detailed characterization of the materials and their electrochemistry will be described.
