In this research, will be studied the presence of fecal contamination indicator bacteria in Mayagüez Bay. The objectives of this research are to detect the presence of Total Coliforms and <i>Escherichia coli</i>, report the results to educate the general and scientific community about the water quality of Mayagüez Bay, and to observe the results obtained from the sampling days. The Mayagüez Bay is one of the most valuable resources in the western area due to the diversity of organisms it possesses. Mayagüez Bay is also known for being a beach not suitable for swimmers. According to the CIMP Mayagüez Bay Watershed (2003), this is due to pollution from chemical industries, waste discharges from water treatment plants, and discharges from tuna factories. Currently, the beaches of Mayagüez are not being monitored by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources. For this reason, the water quality in this area will be studied. It is important that the beaches are monitored since we can acquire pathogens that can cause serious diseases in humans such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, and poliomyelitis. Many times, we do not give importance to these issues because they do not necessarily affect us on a daily basis. However, if we do not seek immediate help, these pathogens could be deadly. With this sampling we will be able to determine the water quality of the Mayagüez Bay and we will be able to educate the community about the level of risk that it poses. In addition, this research will help the Puerto Rican scientific community to be able to continue sampling water quality in other towns in Puerto Rico in order to provide a better future for our country.
