Designing interfaces with scalable control over chemical environments, ranging from molecular to macroscopic scales, is critical for materials utilized for electronics, regenerative medicine, and other applications. For instance, monolayers with 1-nm-resolution functional patterns can be prepared by Langmuir-Schaefer transfer (LS), and microscale hierarchical patterning is possible via microcontact printing (μCP). Here, we demonstrate routes for high throughput generation of large-area hierarchically patterned monolayers of polydiacetylenes (PDAs) on a crystalline substrate. Subsequently, patterned PDAs are transferred to hydrogel (e.g., polyacrylamide) and elastomer (e.g., polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) substrates suitable for applications in areas including cell culture.
