Sample preparation is an inevitable step involved in the analytical workflow and in fact, it consumes 60-80 percent of the total analysis time. In this study, a novel sorbent material considered to be ‘universal’ due to its ability to establish different intermolecular and interionic interactions such as hydrogen bond, π-π interaction, cationic-exchange and anionic-exchange, hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with the target compounds was coated on cellulose fabric via sol-gel technique. The developed sorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques to obtain the surface morphology information and functional groups of the constituting materials as well as the final product. Thereafter, the adsorption capability of the three formulations of the fabricated novel material (F1, F2 and F3) was conducted with nine test compounds of environmental concerns with varying polarity (log Kow values between 1 and 6). The test compounds include anthracene, phenol, naphthalene, 1,3-benzodioxole, fufuryl alcohol, piperonal, triclosan, 4-nitrotoluene and diethylstilbestrol. The instrumental analysis entails the use of high performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV) in which an isocratic separation mode with acetonitrile: water (60:40) as mobile phase at a flow rate of 1 mL/min on a C-18 Zorbax reverse phase chromatographic column. The adsorption capability test indicated that F3 demonstrated the best adsorption characteristics for these analytes and hence chosen for subsequent analytical applications. Subsequently, the developed universal fabric sorptive extraction membrane was deployed for the monitoring of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), organophosphate pesticides, fluoroquinolones as well as phthalates. Summarized data for these analytical studies and analytical figures of merit will also be presented.
