Biofilms affect various products, from medical applications, marine structures, pipeworks, etc., in industries to dining & kitchen in our daily lives. Polymeric materials play essential roles in those products. We know biofilm formation would be related to polymeric surface conditions and the interaction forces between bacterial and materials’ surfaces. In this experiment, we artificially used a flow-type biofilm reactor to produce biofilms on various polymeric substances. We discussed the mechanism of what kind of materials’ factors would affect biofilm behaviors on polymeric materials. We evaluated the qualitative characteristics (by Raman Spectroscopy) and quantitative ones (by Cristal Violet) staining. And we analyzed the biofilm behaviors from the viewpoint of mutual interactions between materials’ surfaces and polymers in biofilms, using polarity, surface tension, dielectric constants, van der Walls’ force, etc.
