The overabundance of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere is a pertinent environmental issue, and organometallic catalysts can be used to activate CO2 to be functionalized or reduced. Noble metal catalysts are effective in reducing CO2 to formate, but due to their high cost, limited abundance, and high toxicity they are not sustainable. A more sustainable approach employs the use of base metals in catalysis. Our group reports the synthesis and characterization of pincer style (PNP)nickel complexes that contain different proton-responsive aryl and alkyl sulfonamide groups in the secondary coordination sphere. Progress towards the synthesis of nickel hydride and nickel alkyl complexes is also highlighted.
