Some chemical groups are broadly considered functionally inert.  Trifluoromethane, for instance, can reliably be counted on to be a spectator in most synthetic transformations.  However, our lab has demonstrated that using highly Lewis acidic boron centers, the trifluoromethyl group can be targeted for modification, even in moderately complex functional group settings.  This transformation converts the CF3 group to the much more versatile functional handles CCl3, CBr3, and CF2Br.  These functional handles then provide access to a myriad of further diversification options, from the formation of heterocycles to cross-coupling reactions.  In parallel, the targeting of C–O bonds in our lab has enabled applications in sustainable chemistry development, such as the mild separation of cellulose from lignocellulose – a biopolymer that can provide a renewable sources of aromatic chemicals such as vanillin.  This talk will examine the development and utility of such boron-mediated methodologies. <br/><br/>Just as our synthetic work relies on the formation of even stronger boron-fluorine and boron-oxygen bonds in order to break the strongest covalent carbon bond type (C–F), the formation and growth of gender equity and DEI groups across the world has slowly transformed chemistry culture.  In generating stronger bonds within our communities, we have collectively been able to tackle the tenacious systematic bias that has until recently seemed impervious to change.  As such, I will also discuss personal experiences and actions towards the bolstering of a DEI-embracing scientific culture.
