Our students learn about climate change in the news and in some of our classes, and they are hungry for what to do with that knowledge and how to connect it within their careers and communities. Climate touches and belongs in every subject we teach, from Humanities, business, and health sciences, to all areas of STEM. Dr. Price will share her work integrating climate justice into her general chemistry and GOB courses as part of the Climate Justice Project at North Seattle College. This project was originally developed at Bellevue College by Sonya Remington Doucette in 2018 and adopted by North Seattle College under the leadership of Heather Price in 2019, forming a collaboration between the institutions that led to a successful NSF IUSE grant (NSF DUE 2043535) that is currently underway. This initiative seeks to build bridges between disciplines to help faculty incorporate climate justice and civic engagement into their core curriculum, in ways that empower students and encourage student retention and success and is being disseminated throughout Washignton State 2-year colleges under the leadership of Irene Shaver at the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. In today’s talk Dr. Price will give an overview of the Climate Justice Across the Curriculum project and share specific examples from general and introductory chemistry that illustrate how and why to integrate climate justice and civic engagements into the chemistry curriculum.
