Strongly bound atomic clusters are often used as models for the active sites in heterogeneous catalysis and materials chemistry.  Building up from a single atom to bulk material progresses through the cluster size region, where individual cluster structures and properties can drastically change with the addition of a single atom.  In this presenation, we describe how we address various novel questions in this research field at a primarily undergraduate institution.  Starting with a computational chemistry approach, we describe the theoretical techniques and global optimization schemes employed in our laboratory to predict the geometries and internal bonding of doped silicon clusters and metal hydride species.  Experimentally, we then depict our recent advances with local matrix isolation infrared investigations.  We will also discuss our recent advncen in mixsed transition metal clusters.
