Metal alkynyl complexes are appealing because of their potential use as opto-electronic materials, molecular wires, or active species for molecular devices. Many metal alkynyl complexes use 4d or 5d metals; replacement of these metals with earth-abundant 3d metals is important for technological applications. This poster focuses on both the synthesis and characterization of a novel series of mono- and bis-CoIII(TIM) alkynyl complexes (TIM is 2,3,9,10-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,3,8,10-tetraene. The trans-[Co(TIM)(C2R)Cl]PF6 complexes were generated by the addition of HC2R (R = tri(isopropyl)silyl or TIPS (1), -C6H4-4-tBu (2), -C6H4-4-NO2 (3a), and NAPMes (4a)) in the presence of Et3N. The subsequent treatment of 3a and 4a with AgOTf in MeCN led to the production of the intermediate complexes, trans-[Co(TIM)(C2R)NCMe](PF6)(OTf) (R = -C6H2-4-NO2 (3b) and NAPMes (4b)). The symmetric bis-alkynyl trans-[Co(TIM)(C2R)2]PF6 (R = C6H2-4-NO2 (3c) and NAPMes (4c)) were readily obtained upon the addition of the respective HC2R to 3b and 4b in the presence of Et3N. The molecular structures for these complexes have been characterized via X-ray diffraction as well as FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. Additionally, their electronic properties have been probed via UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.
