The massive accumulation of packaging wastes in the natural environment surges at breakneck pace and simultaneously poses the significance of developing sustainable packaging materials. Papers have been considered as sustainable packaging materials; however their inherent porous structure is a hurdle for single packaging application. With this concern, coated paper can be used for a wide range of packaging applications. A coated paper is a layered composite consisting of a paper base covered with polymer coating. In this study, the microscopically effects of epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a binder on the interfacial interactions between paper and crosslinked PVA coating were investigated. Additionally, the coated paper was evaluated to provide insights into the effects of ECH on papers performance e.g. interfacial microstructure morphology, barrier properties, and packaging applicability. To identify the effect of ECH, the properties of coated paper were characterized using Field emission scanning electron microscope, water and oil contact angle, water vapor transmission rate, oxygen transmission rate, universal testing machine, storage test, and recycling test. The uncoated paper showed a tensile strength of 36.8 MPa while this value increased to 99.7 MPa in PVA-coated papers. The paper treated with ECH led to a remarkable enhancement in interfacial interactions, which decreased OTR and WVTR values. In addition, this high-barrier coated paper extended the shelf life and quality of the cracker cookies. The recyclability data also showed that the coated paper could be readily removed, through which the paper can be recovered for future use. Therefore, these results demonstrated that as-prepared coated papers could be an eco-friendly alternative to conventional high-barrier packaging for use in the food industries.
