The emergence of a surface plasmon—an electronic oscillation—at the surface of a nanoscale metal when it is impinged by an external light wave is a phenomenon that can be used to improve, direct or fundamentally modify the properties of nanophotonic devices. By locally enhancing the optical field, nanoplasmonics can afford faster single-photon sources (SPSs) and support cooperative emission in an ensemble of quantum emitters. Such plasmonics-assisted nanophotonic devices can potentially be incorporated into photonic integrated circuits. To date nanoplasmonic-enabled devices have relied on a variety of noble-metal-based nanoantennas supporting localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) and periodic structures supporting surface lattice resonances (SLRs). Such metals are potentially contaminants for circuitry and, therefore, not directly CMOS-technology compatible, and the LSPR of a noble metal is spectrally limited. Doped semiconductors can also support an LSPR, but with tunability into the infrared, including the technologically significant telecommunications window. Here, I will describe our efforts to develop new plasmonic nanomaterials based on spinel metal oxides, which afford dopability through both structural disorder and stoichiometry, as well as the development of uniquely stable quantum emitters as "partners" in hybrid plasmonic-photonic assemblies. Finally, I will show how botton-up or direct-write techniques are being used to assemble sophisticated plasmonic-emitter couples taking advantage of colloidal chemstry.
