Prostate cancer is the most common cancer type found in men, and chances of receiving a diagnosis increases with age. The PC-3 prostate cancer cell line is commonly used for cancer research and treatment development. Ethanolic extracts of the medicinal plants Chaparral (Larrea tridentate) and Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) were shown to produce cytotoxic effects when administered to PC-3 cells. These crude extracts were separated using thin layer chromatography and flash chromatography to isolate and identify which possible compound or combination of compounds within the extracts were the source of cytotoxicity. Representative fractions containing different thin layer chromatography profiles were used to treat PC-3 cells at 100 ug/ml concentrations; n=3. A cell-titer glow assay was performed on the cells 24 hours after treatment to assess cell viability, normalized to ethanol only as a control. Red sandalwood fractions that eluted first during flash chromatography possessed the most cytotoxicity. Cytotoxic fractions were further analyzed using HPLC.
