Wittig reactions are useful in preparing alkenes from aldehydes or ketones. A greener approach to this reaction is mechanically grinding the reagents with a mortar and pestle. Previous research in our group was performed to determine the effects that each component provided to the overall reaction, including carbonyl types, phosphonium ylide stability, and type of base. It was found that reactions that involved aromatic aldehyde carbonyl and stable phosphonium ylides would react. In the next step we will try some of the selected aliphatic aldehydes under the same condition.
