The perovskite-derived Ruddlesden Popper (RP) layered oxides with the general formula An-1A'2BnO3n+1, feature fascinating properties such as magnetism, catalytic properties, charge transport properties, etc. that result from varying the material compositions. The bi-layered (n=2) RP structure consists of bilayer stacks of BO6 octahedra with a transition metal or a mixture of transition metals at the B-site. The A-site ions are located in two distinct crystallographic positions, within and between the bilayer stacks. Two isoelectronic RP oxides were synthesized by changing their A-site. In these systems, the structural symmetry varies as the ionic radius changes from Ca2+ (1.18) to Sr2+ (1.31). The effects of structural symmetry on electrical charge transport and electrocatalytic activity have been studied for the two materials. We have observed a significant enhancement of electrical and electrocatalytic properties, which correlate with the change in the structural symmetry. In the whole temperature range of study, material with higher symmetry exhibits improved charge transport properties. Moreover, it shows enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen-evolution (HER) and the oxygen-evolution reactions (OER). This is demonstrated by the improved reaction kinetics and overpotentials for both HER and OER.
