Reactions that can add, remove, or replace a single atom in a molecule's structure offer a powerful tool to quickly generate new analogs and explore chemical space. Within this area, we have developed a “nitrogen-deletion” method than can extrude the nitrogen atom from a primary or secondary amine, generating a C-H or C-C bond, respectively, in its place. Mechanistic studies of these reactions and their exotic intermediates offer an opportunity to enhance our understanding of rare chemical species and enable the development of new transformations.
