Plant-derived cannabinoids have been used for many decades as palliative agents for cancer patients, and different such compounds and cannabinoid-based pharmaceutical drugs have been the subject of intensive research for their potential antitumor activity. Much evidence can be found in the literature on the ability of these compounds to induce cell death by various pathways, more research is needed to understand their exact molecular targets and mechanism(s) of action. Besides the reported signalling pathways through which cannabinoids can impact proliferation, insights on a novel cannabinoid-induced effect on cancer metabolic plasticity will be described.
