About 11% of the United States population has diabetes and in recent years this has increased. Sugar sensing molecules are extremely valuable in biological systems for their applications in the determination of blood glucose levels in people with diabetes. Recent research has focused on the utilization of fluorescent boronic acids for sugar sensing. Boronic acids are of interest because they are able to reversely bind to diol-containing compounds such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose. This research focuses on the synthesis and purification of boronic acids in cross conjugated pi systems, such as dibenzylideneacetone. Thin layer chromatography will be employed to determine separation and purity of synthesized boronic acid compounds. Future work must be done to determine the ideal procedure for filtration and purification, and results will be present upon completion of research.
