This presentation discusses a library instruction program in which popular science literature has been used to teach information literacy to First-Year chemistry students. Since Fall 2012, undergraduates enrolled in CHE 193 at Adelphi University have been required to attend a library instruction session in their first fall semester and learn how to search popular science magazines for chemistry or biochemistry related articles. CHE 193 is an introductory Research Seminar course and aims to bridge the gap between high school and college level research experiences and expectations. The students learned about the ACRL threshold concept "Searching as Strategic Exploration" and the intricacies of scientific literature searching as they retrieved articles related to chemistry or biochemistry by searching two electronic popular science magazines, <i>Scientific American</i> and <i>American Scientist</i>.
