We have developed a first-year seminar style course on the interrelationship between art and science for first-semester students at High Point University. This course does not fulfill a natural science general education requirement and thus typical natural science learning outcomes are not expected. Instead, the learning objectives of this course are centered around development of inter- and intrapersonal skills, such as teamwork and resilience. Integrative learning, in which students have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned previously in the class in new contexts, is also an expected learning outcome. The course was structured to consist of four modules on color, photography, metalwork, and sculpture. Students utilized scientific equipment and instrumentation, including the UV-visible spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence analyzer, and 3-D printer, in the process of creating their artistic products. The content of each module was supplemented by student presentations, discussions, and field trips. At the conclusion of the semester, each student proposed and executed a final project which was presented at a final gallery show during the final exam period. This poster will present an overview of this course as well as examples of student work.
