The goal of this project was to determine the relationships between temperature and diffusion coefficient of selected analytes in the presence and absence of a stationary phase. This was investigated using Capillary Electrochromatography (CEC). A series of benzene derivatives were selected as the model analytes. The mobile phase consisted of 75:25 acetonitrile:Tris base. The analyte series and mobile phase were selected based on their use in previous studies.<sup>1,2</sup> Firstly, this system was used to analyze the kinetics of the analytes in an open capillary room temperature. Secondly synthesis of the stationary phase was altered via use of different porogens. Porogens can affect pore size, and therefore the kinetics of the selected analytes, within the stationary phase. Pore size was observed and compared using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Thirdly, this project also sought to investigate the development of a stimuli-responsive stationary phase.
