Dopamine hydrochloride upon allylation and HCl treatment afforded N, N diallyl dopamine hydrochloride. Diallydimethylammonium chloride homopolymerized. Likewise, it copolymerizes with N,N-diallyldopamine hydrochloride to get copolymers in 95:5, 90:10, and 80:20 with excellent yields. Moreover, polymerization of these monomers with SO2 gave terpolymers in monomeric ratios of, 5:95:100, 10:90:100, and 20:80:100. The presence of dopamine residues made the polymers outstanding inhibitors of mild steel corrosion in acidic media. At a concentration of 10 ppm, polymer with 20 % dopamine shows 94.1% inhibition of mild steel corrosion at 60 °C in 1 M HCl, while at 20 ppm demonstrated a percent inhibition of 98 %. In 15 % HCl polymer at 20 ppm containing 0, 5, 10, and 20 mol% dopamine residues were also effective in 15% HCl, imparting respective inhibitions of 67.2, 74.2, 81.4, and 85.2%.at 60 °C, while a mixture of 20 ppm containing 20% dopamine and 400 ppm iodide ions demonstrated synergistic inhibition of 95.1%. %. Cationic polyelectrolyte has been shown to form polyelectrolyte complex/coacervate with three model anionic polyelectrolytes.
