Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials formed by coordination bonds between organic ligands and metal ions or metal clusters. A water-stable aluminum-based MOF called MOF-303 (Al(OH)(HPDC; HPDC=3,5-pyrazoledicarboxylic acid) has one-dimensional hydrophilic channel sites and quick water molecule adsorption kinetics, which favors the creation of water molecules' fast transport channels. The framework's hydrophilicity and high pore volume translate into a superior capacity to absorb water. Additionally, the MOF-303's one-dimensional channel with a diameter of roughly 0.60 nm, which is between the diameters of water molecules (0.28 nm) and commonly hydrated ions (0.66 nm), offering an effective method for achieving desalination by size sieving. In this work, continuous, defect-free MOF-303 membranes were produced on α-Al2O3 supports by in situ hydrothermal synthesis. The membranes as-prepared had a higher permeability coefficient (3.0 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 μm) and appropriate divalent ion rejection (e.g., MgCl2 rejection was 93.5%, Na2SO4 rejection was 96.0%). The MOF-303 membrane has a potential use for the preparation of hard water softening since it is inexpensive to prepare and has good stability.
