Diabetes mellitus is a chronic non-communicable metabolic condition associated with disruption of glucose metabolism and is found to be prevalent amongst the Guyanese population. This study explores the antidiabetic potential of the natural herbal remedies, Rumex acetosa (Sorrel)/ Syzygium cumini (Jamun) aqueous leaf extract in lowering the concentration of blood glucose in Alloxan Monohydrate-induced diabetic guinea pigs. The twelve (12) guinea pigs acquired were divided into four (4) equal groups in which each group were placed in a separate cage. However, groups B, C, and D were made diabetic by administering Alloxan Monohydrate at a dose of 150mg/kg solubilized in 2.5 - 4 ml distilled water, which was used in the experiment after 48 hours. The remaining control group A was not made diabetic. All the groups were fed a standard diet (feed pellets and water), with addition of Glibenclamide to group B, and a definite volume of the aqueous extract (leaves of sorrel/jamun) to group C and D. For the control group, glibenclamide, Sorrel and Jamun Group, the blood glucose level was 113 ±2.016 mg/dl, 130.67 ± 1.05 mg/dl, 128mg/dl ± 1.65 and 132.67 ± 1.01 mg/dl on day 1 initially. At the end of the experiment, they were 115.0 ± 2.631 mg/dl, 84.0 ± 1.05 mg/dl, 81.67 ± 1.5 mg/dl and 120.00 ±1.65 mg/dl respectively. Thus, the Glibenclamide, Sorrel and Jamun groups were all hypoglycemic in nature, with percentage reduction in blood glucose level of 35%, 36% and 9% respectively. Thus, the Sorrel aqueous extract hypoglycemic potency was comparable to synthetic glibenclamide and thus can be used as an alternative complimentary anti-diabetic medicine.
