Heavy metals such as cadmium, manganese, and cadmium are a public and environmental health concern. Their toxicity depends on overall exposure in terms dosage, frequency and duration. Exposures can lead to organ damage including, but not limited to, intestinal, liver and kidney, as well as anemia and cancer. Heavy metals may also displace needed minerals from their original place and hinder their biological function. Multiple techniques are capable of detecting and determining the concentrations of trace amounts of heavy metal contaminants, but their usage is often limited by lack of sensitivity, cost, or complexity of sample prep. Cloudpoint extraction is a promising sample prep and preconcentration technique that avoids the use of solvents, is relatively fast, and generates less waste than many other extraction techniques, In this research, ICP-OES techniques are evaluated as a tool for analyzing cloudpoint extract samples containing Pb, Cd, and Mn.
