Novel palladium(II) complexes were synthesized by the reaction of (ethylenediamine)palladium(II) chloride and phenanthroline-based ligands including 1,10-phenanthroline, 4,7-dimethoxy-1,10-phenanthroline, 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline and 5-chloro-1,10-phenanthroline. In these new complexes, the palladium metal center is in a distorted square planar geometry where the inner coordination sphere contains one ethylenediamine ligand and one phenanthroline ligand. Infrared spectroscopy, <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction were used to elucidate the structure of new compounds. The <i>in vitro</i> cytotoxic activity of these new complexes against MCF-7 breast cancer cells will be reported and compared to other known metal complexes to establish their potential as antitumor drugs.
