Improving student lab skills and making lab report grading more equitable for students across sections and graders (often TAs) is a common goal of science departments and lab coordinators. Students come to labs unprepared to work successfully, and often do not recognize issues as they collect and analyze data. Differing TAs vary significantly in their assessment of student performance on lab reports. This includes the stringency applied to grading student work, quality of feedback, and timeliness for returning grades and comments.<br/><br/>We have developed Labflow, a scalable cloud-based platform for lab teaching and learning, to change the nature of lab reports from summative to lower-stakes formative activities that provide students immediate feedback as they collect data in the lab and compose their lab reports, resulting in a 15% improvement in lab report scores for students that take advantage of the feedback. Rubric-based grader/TA scoring and feedback, automatic grading of calculations and conclusions, enhanced grading workflows, and grading analytics has been shown to reduce grading time and the timeliness of grader feedback, as well as improve grading consistency.
