Tricarbonyl(tropone)iron is a simple but versatile starting material for the construction of complex azapolycycles. We report novel uses of this starting material for the efficient synthesis of bridged azabicycles common to a number of alkaloid natural products. Addition of amine nucleophiles featuring a pendant furan to tricarbonyl(tropone)iron fashions intermediates poised to undergo intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions following decomplexation from the iron. These cycloadditions furnish complex, highly functionalized intermediates capable of extensive downstream diversification.
