BetaBrachTM, a beta-minus (β-) emitting agent formulated as a liquid suspension of [90Y]yttrium hydroxycarbonate microparticles for intratumoral administration, releases high energy β- particles into diseased tissue with minimal radiotoxic dose to surrounding tissues. The current radiosynthetic method uses high specific activity [90Y]YCl3 sourced from a 90Sr/90Y generator. In this presentation, we will report the physical and chemical characterization of non-radioactive and decayed microparticles along with the reformulation of the radiosynthesis to use a low specific activity [90Y]YCl3 reagent prepared from the 89Y(n,γ)90Y nuclear reaction at the University of Missouri Research Reactor. In addition, we will present results from a particle migration study, which revealed high retention of the radiomicroparticles at the site of administration, as well as a brachytherapy study, which demonstrated a significant therapeutic effect in tumor-bearing mice.
