Anticorrosive coating is one of the functional coating types which basically provides external protection against the corrosive agents towards the targeted metal substances. Traditionally, anticorrosive paints are prepared by including zinc phosphate; the most common anticorrosive agent. As deviating from the traditional methods new anticorrosive polymeric composites have been developed with the advancement in polymer science and technology. Even though corrosion phenomena has been extensively studied, development of anticorrosive coatings with enhanced performance is still a requirement. The objective of this research is to develop a novel anticorrosive paint formulation. Hence, novel filler samples which were proposed to act as anti-corrosive agents were developed. MMT which can act as a barrier for corrosive agents was used to incorporate CTAB and Zinc ions in order to develop the modified anticorrosive filler of the paint formulation. MMT was treated with ZnCl<sub>2</sub> and CTAB separately to achieve Zn modified MMT (Zn-MMT) and CTAB modified MMT (CTAB-MMT), respectively. XRD and FTIR analysis confirmed the intercalation of both Zn ions and quaternary ammonium ions of CTAB. A series of paints were prepared by incorporating modified MMT and the performance . was evaluated by the self-developed preliminary immersion test. The test results of the immersion test showed that both Zn-MMT and CTAB-MMT added paint samples exhibited comparable performance to commercially available paints and better corrosion protection coating than the other formulated paints. The salt spray test (ASTM B117) results showed that the prepared paint with Zn-MMT and CTAB-MMT in 1:1 ratio has comparably better tolerance against corrosion.
