Aquinas College is a small vibrant college in the center of west Michigan. Our chemistry society has faced many challenges coming back from COVID-19 but this has led us to many triumphs. In the face of adversity, the Aquinas Chemistry Society has flourished. We created more outreach and participation in our weekly, volunteer-led, tutoring sessions for many different levels of chemistry classes, leading to more student success in these challenging classes. To celebrate and educate students during national chemistry week, a plethora of activities were held on campus. Our most meaningful activities were the research presentations and Group STEM events. The research presentations allow students to explore and learn about different topics and possible jobs surrounding subjects such as biochemistry and physical chemistry. The other activity was the “STEM Olympics.” Aquinas has struggled to partner and connect with the other STEM groups so this activity was led to create a stronger community between STEM organizations and clubs on campus. This event paired physical contests with knowing trivia and solving problems based on the different major STEM groups Aquinas has on Campus; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Nursing. The Aquinas Chemistry Society also took the trip to San Diego, California to experience the national meeting where we listened to many different lectures from Ph.D. candidates and scientists. Along with these activities our chapter holds monthly meetings to connect with students in fun ways through games like Pictionary and bingo or community-building events like donation drives and alumni panels in addition to fun chemistry experiments. These events are aimed to help educate students on how important chemistry is and how it influences our daily lives. Through these events, even with the lasting effects of the global pandemic, we have built a stronger and more engaged community on our campus through our student chapter. It has allowed us to think creatively and learn better ways to reach out to our Aquinas community.
