MXenes, known as superior photothermal conversion materials [1-2], have been studied for various photothermal applications. However, the use of 2D MXenes for photothermal catalytic conversion of CO2 has not been reported so far. Thus, our work firstly reveals the great potential of MXene materials in the development of photothermal CO2 hydrogenation. We demonstrated that MXene materials can be used as ideal supports to enhance the photothermal effect for metal nanoparticles, further boosting photothermal catalytic performance. Additionally, MXene materials can be used as ideal substrates to stabilize metal nanoparticles. Then, we propose the concept of developing efficient light-driven heterogeneous catalysis based on MXene-supported metal clusters (Ru/Mo2TiC2). Ru/Mo2TiC2 can catalyze photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to produce CO with excellent activity, selectivity, and stability. Our study bridges the gap between photothermal MXene materials and photothermal CO2 catalysis and stimulates the interest in MXene-supported metal nanoparticles for more heterogeneous catalytic reactions.
