Controlled radical polymerization was employed in a modular approach to synthesize dynamic polymer nanocomposites (DPNs) using different architectures which included interpenetrating (IPN) and block copolymer (BCN) networks through dynamic Diels-Alder and quadrupole hydrogen bonding. Structure-property relationships highlighting the impact of polymer architecture, chain length, cross-link density, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) loading was studied. BCNs showed better mechanical performance compared to IPNs, longer chain length and higher cross-links gave enhanced ultimate tensile strengths. Addition of less than 1 wt.% CNTs as nanoreinforcements resulted in electrically conductive and mechanically enhanced DPNs. Furthermore, application of resulting materials as strain sensors and customizable/tunable electrical resistors was demonstrated. This report provides new insights for designing next-generation custom-made resistors and wearable electronics.
