Corteva Agriscience provides innovative and sustainable crop protection solutions to help protect fields from weeds, insects, and diseases that can threaten productive harvests. These crop protection products, including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc., control the growth of weeds, pests, and diseases, thereby improving crop health. Environmental impact of these products must be assessed.  For example, for an herbicide application in the field, there is always a potential of it being transported from its site of application to surface water via overspray, runoff, or other natural or human events. Thus, to enable understanding of herbicide degradation in the environment, it is necessary to identify the potential significant degradation products from aquatic systems. Photodegradation in aqueous systems can produce unique degradates which are difficult to identify and/or synthesize. The photodegradation of halauxifen-methyl (Arylex™), an herbicide that was developed for the control of a broad spectrum of broadleaf and sedge weeds as well as some key grass weed species, is an example of a parent compound producing such challenging photoproducts. This presentation will demonstrate non-traditional procedures for identifying photodegradation products such as UV loop reactor degradation and scaled-up photodegradation experiments under xenon light. The focus will remain on how these techniques enable cross-collaboration between multiple research groups to successfully generate and identify photodegradants.
