Recently, there is an increasing interest in high-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) for heavy duty applications, which have advantages in enhanced fuel impurities tolerance, easier heat rejection, and simpler water management. By using phosphoric acid (H<sub>3</sub>PO<sub>4</sub>)-doped polymer electrolyte (e.g., polybenzimidazole, quaternary ammonium biphosphate ion pair coordinated polyphenylene, etc.), it overcomes the proton conductivity limit of Nafion at high temperature (120-220 °C). However, a high loading of platinum(Pt)-based catalyst is still demanded due to their low activity in phosphoric acid. In this presentation, we will discuss the correlation and difference of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Pt and a series of Pt alloy (Pt-M) catalysts in both diluted and concentrated phosphoric acid. Based on what we have learnt in the experiments and literature investigation, we will share our perspectives of key questions that need to be better understood to improve the ORR performance in HT-PEMFCs.
