A novel and facile methodology for the synthesis and purification of α-nitro and keto chalcones is described. The one-pot microwave Knoevenagel reaction has been expanded and optimized to include cyano, fluoro, ester, bromo, and chloro chalcones. Previous attempts to synthesize nitro chalcones has proven difficult due to the stability of a six-member ring intermediate, but recent developments using excess of aldehyde has improved the yielded of the desired chalcones. Utilizing a simple bisulfite wash to rid the reaction of excess aldehyde has led to an improved purification of the desired products. This methodology has been successfully applied to α-keto chalcones.  Additional computational and NMR studies have been used to better understand the conformation of the synthesis chalcones.
