I attended The University of Alabama for my undergraduate and graduate degrees from 1975-1982. Professor Jerry Atwood introduced me to Chemistry (Chem 117/118) in my first year and for the remainder of my time at UA introduced me to research, the pursuit of knowledge, and some hints on life in general. This presentation will provide a historical perspective of those times, but importantly note how a molecular level understanding of any system allows one to understand much more than one narrow academic discipline. The connections and network I developed in school were not of the social types, but rather the types of thought that can bring disparate concepts to common understanding. How well I was taught to communicate such ideas is meant to be an outcome of this presentation, but remains to be seen.
