The SARS-COV-2 virus (Covid-19) has presented an exceptional challenge to the global public health due to its rampant transmission. Hand sanitizer is an effective and affordable option that can be used to lessen the rate of transmission of the virus. Amidst the variety of different market available brands that appear to be safe, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to identify quality problems with many hand sanitizers sold on the market including effectiveness and safety. The ability to formulate safe and effective hand sanitizers is important for the minimization of the spread of Covid-19 along with other harmful pathogens. The poster presents the formulation of various alcohol-based hand sanitizers that are composed of ethyl alcohol and/or isopropyl alcohol, glycerol, hydrogen peroxide and deionized water strictly adhering to the CDC guidelines and good manufacturing practice. Two dosage forms of liquid and gel hand sanitizers were formulated, and three commercially available hand sanitizers were used for comparative analysis. The quality control testing to determine % alcohol in the hand sanitizers was performed using HPLC. The antimicrobial effectiveness of the hand sanitizers in growth inhibition was determined using <i>E</i><i>scherichia coli</i> laboratory strain DH5α. The microbial zone inhibition of the lab-made formulations was found to be higher and proved more effective than the name brand hand sanitizers, likely due to high alcohol content. Findings suggest that when the quality of the hand sanitizer is assured, its safety and effectiveness is also guaranted.
