<br/>A reversible solid oxide cell (RSOC) is a state-of-the-art device for both power generation and energy storage. In the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) mode, the device converts the chemical energy of oxidation of fuel into electricity while storing renewable electricity into hydrogen in the solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) mode. Clearly, understanding the physics of the RSOC modes of degradation and increasing the stability of a SOEC can accelerate the market entry for this technology. Degradation involves the formation of cracks near the oxygen electrode along the electrode-electrolyte interfaces and can eventually lead to electrode delamination.<br/> <br/>In this talk, I will discuss our theoretical analysis that enables the understanding of durability of the performance solid oxide cells for hydrogen production. Specifically, the calculation of oxygen chemical potential in a solid electrolyte with and without the presence of a penny-shaped crack is carried out. The kinetics of crack propagation are evaluated by considering the electrochemical process and classical elasticity. Material properties and operating conditions are considered, and their impacts are investigated to guide the material selection for SOEC development. Experimental results are provided to validate our theoretical analysis.
